International Students' Frequently Asked Questions
KSU has students from more than 100 countries and is proud of its international student body. If you are an international student, your application for admission to Kansas State University must meet the same academic standards for admission as those required of native students. In addition, international applicants holding nonimmigrant visas are required by U.S. immigration regulations to be enrolled in a full course of study.
The Kansas Board of Regents requires that all international students maintain health insurance coverage. Insurance coverage will be automatically included in your tuition bills. If you have questions about the health insurance coverage or prefer to obtain health insurance from another provider, please contact International Student and Scholar Services at ininsure@k-state.edu.
Applications:
International applicants may apply for admission and pay their $55 application fee via credit card by using the online application. Applicants who apply by paper application must pay the $55 application fee by international cashiers check or money order made payble to Kansas State University Graduate School. PLEASE DO NOT SEND CASH. ** PLEASE NOTE: Some programs may require an additional application fee. If applying to graduate programs in the College of Architecture or the College of Business, additional application fees apply. Refer to program websites for more information. Applications without this fee will not be processed. Each application must be accompanied by the Affidavit of Financial Support form verifying that financial support is available for the student while attending Kansas State University.
The Affidavit of Financial Support form can be printed in (WORD) or (PDF) format and from our website at: http://www.k-state.edu/grad/students/international.html. Depending on fee status, up to $28,822 per year is required for tuition, books, subsistence, and other necessary costs.
The Graduate School requires each international applicant whose native language is not English to demonstrate competence in the English language by achieving a satisfactory score (defined below) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), and Pearson Test of English. The TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE is required to ensure that the student’s progress toward a degree is not jeopardized by language barriers. The TOEFL (K-State TOEFL school code 6334) is offered several times a year throughout the world by the Educational Testing Service, Princeton, New Jersey. International applicants are advised to take the TOEFL as early as possible to avoid delays in the processing of their applications for admission. An applicant who has received a degree in the last two years from a United States college or university is exempt from this requirement. However, individual programs may require demonstration of English language proficiency.
English Proficiency Requirements:
* Applicants who are submitting iBT TOEFL (internet based) scores must have a minimum total score of 79 with no part score below 20 on the reading, listening, and writing sections.
* Applicants who are submitting a paper-based TOEFL (PBT) test scores must have a minimum total score of 550 with no part score below 55 on reading or listening sections and a TWE (Test of Written English) score of 5.0 or higher.
* Applicants who are submitting an IELTS score must have a minimum total score of 6.5 with part scores of 6.5 or higher on the reading, listening, and writing sections.
* Applicants who are submitting a Pearson Test of English (PTE) score must have a minimum total score of 58 with part scores of 58 or higher.
Applicants who do not meet the scores specified above must meet the following criteria during the first semester of enrollment in order to satisfy the English proficiency requirement:
* Applicants with one or two low part scores (14-19 IBT, 48-54 PBT, 5.0-6.4 IELTS, or 47-57 PTE) must successfully complete one or more of the specified classes based on the section of the examination that is below the minimum (20 IBT; 55 on reading or listening sections and a TWE of less than 5.0 on PBT; 6.5 IELTS; 58 PTE):
- DAS 176 – Reading Skills
- DAS 177 – Written Communication
- DAS 178 – Listening Skills
Waivers will not be approved.
* Applicants with three part scores below 20 IBT, 55 PBT, 6.5 IELTS, or 58 PTE are required to take the English Proficiency Test (EPT) and successfully complete the English course(s) specified on their EPT score reports. Waivers will not be approved.
* Applicants with any one score below 14 IBT, 48 PBT, 5.0 IELTS, or 47 PTE must take the English Proficiency Test and successfully complete full time intensive English. Waivers will not be approved.
Those who are determined to need substantial work in English will be required to participate in the English Language Program (click here).
Standardized Tests:
If your graduate program requires standardized tests, you should request the Educational Testing Service to send your scores to Kansas State University. If you indicated where you wanted your scores sent (the academic department and Kansas State University) when you took the test, your scores will automatically be sent. The Graduate School does not accept photocopies as official for admission purposes. Standardized tests scores are valid for five years. (If available, please include test scores in the application.)
Primary Language:
To demonstrate competence in the English language, an official report of scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System - academic exam (IELTS) or the Pearson Test of English must be sent to Kansas State University for all applicants whose primary language is not English. Those who have received a degree in the last two years from a United States college or university are not required to submit a TOEFL/IELTS score. However, individual programs may require demonstration of English language proficiency. Individuals who attended, but did not graduate with a degree from a United States college or university will be required to take the English Proficiency Test.
TOEFL:
The TOEFL is offered several times a year throughout the world by the Educational Testing Service, PO Box 6151, Princeton, New Jersey 08540, USA, telephone 609-771-7100 or www.toefl.org.
There are three types of TOEFL scores: paper-based TOEFL, computer-based TOEFL and TOEFL IBT (internet-based TOEFL taken in real time). TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the intial test date.
A score of at least 550 (paper-based test), 213 (computer-based test), or 79 (IBT - internet-based test) on the TOEFL is required to be considered for admission to the Graduate School. (NOTE: Some programs require a TOEFL score higher than stated here.) Applicants with scores of 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based) or 100 (IBT - internet based) or above may be considered for regular admission. Applicants with scores between 550/213/79 and 599/249/99 may be admitted provisionally and must at the time of their enrollment demonstrate proficiency in reading and writing English and in understanding spoken American English to the satisfaction of the Graduate School. Those who do not meet the minimum proficiency standard will be required to complete specified courses offered by the English Language Program (ELP) at Kansas State. Intensive English training for students who have TOEFL scores below 550/213/79 is also available through the ELP. IELTS:
The International English Language Testing System - academic exam (IELTS) is offered several times a year by the International English Language Testing System, Pasadena, California 91103, USA. Those who have received a degree in the last two years from a United States college or university are not required to submit an IELTS score but must take an English proficiency test upon arrival to Kansas State University.
A score of at least 6.1 is required to be considered for admission to the Graduate School. (NOTE: Some programs require an IELTS score higher than stated here.) Applicants with scores of 7.0 or above may be considered for regular admission. Applicants with scores between 6.1 to 6.9 may be admitted provisionally and must at the time of their enrollment demonstrate proficiency in reading and writing English and in understanding spoken American English to the satisfaction of the Graduate School. Those who do not meet the minimum proficiency standard will be required to complete specified courses offered by the English Language Program (ELP) at Kansas State. Intensive English training for students who have IELTS scores below 6.1 is also available through the ELP. PEARSON TEST OF ENGLISH:
Students may take PTE Academic to demonstrate their English language proficiency. PTE Academic is a computer-based academic English language proficiency test designed to measure reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, as they are used in an academic setting. Students take the entire three-hour test in one sitting, at a time that suits them in one of Pearson VUE's network of global test centers. Results are delivered online to students normally within 5 days. Kansas State University requires a minimum score of 58 on PTE Academic and a 58 for all subscores (listening, reading, writing, and speaking).
